Plastic Injection Mold Structure – Main Components
Plastic Injection Mold Structure – Main Components
What are the parts of a plastic injection mold? Nhan Loc Phat explains the plates, cavity, core, feed system, cooling, ejection and guiding components.
Plastic injection mold structure
Knowing the structure helps you talk to your mold maker and understand price differences. A mold has a fixed half (injection side) and a moving half (clamp side).

Main components
Clamp plates to mount the mold; cavity for the outer shape; core for inner shapes; sprue, runners and gates to feed plastic; cooling channels; ejector pins and plates; guide pins and bushings; and sliders or lifters for side holes and undercuts.

Two-plate vs three-plate molds
Two-plate molds are simple and cheaper with edge gates. Three-plate molds add a runner plate for center gating and automatic runner separation.
What drives mold cost
Cavity and core steel (P20, NAK80, H13), number of cavities and part complexity, sliders and lifters, and polish requirements. We recommend the structure that fits your part without unnecessary cost.
