The Plastic Injection Molding Cycle in 6 Steps
The Plastic Injection Molding Cycle in 6 Steps
What is plastic injection molding? The six steps of a molding cycle – clamping, injection, packing, cooling, opening and ejection – and how the mold affects each one.
What is plastic injection molding?
Injection molding uses a screw or piston to push molten plastic into a mold cavity, where it cools and takes the mold's shape. It looks simple, but each cycle has six steps and every one depends on the mold.

The 6-step cycle
- Clamping the two mold halves under high force.
- Injection of melted plastic through the sprue.
- Packing pressure to fill every corner and offset shrinkage.
- Cooling through water channels in the mold.
- Opening the moving half.
- Ejection by pins, plates or air.

How the mold matters
Gate position and runners govern injection and packing; cooling layout drives most of the cycle time; draft, ejector layout and polish govern ejection; machining accuracy governs surface quality. A well-designed mold shortens cycles and reduces warpage, sink and flash. Nhan Loc Phat builds injection molds of all types.
