What Is Aluminum Die Casting? Process and Advantages

What is aluminum die casting? The principle, 5-step process, advantages and applications of injecting molten aluminum into steel dies under high pressure.

What is aluminum die casting?

Aluminum die casting uses a piston to inject molten aluminum into a steel die at very high pressure, filling even the finest details. It delivers accurate parts, smooth surfaces and high output for automotive, electronics and construction.

Principle

Aluminum is melted at about 660°C, injected at roughly 1,500–2,500 bar, solidifies quickly in the cooled die, and is ejected before the next cycle.

5-step process

Preparing the die casting mold

1. Die preparation: heat-resistant alloy steel die, cleaned and sprayed with release agent.

Melting aluminum

2. Melting with tight temperature control to limit gas.

Injecting molten aluminum under high pressure

3. Injection from the shot chamber into the cavity.

Cooling and ejecting the die casting

4. Cooling and ejection with water or oil cooling.

Finishing aluminum die castings

5. Finishing: trimming, grinding, anodizing, powder coating or plating.

Advantages

Tolerances around ±0.1 mm, smooth surfaces, short cycles for high volumes, little waste and dense, strong parts. Nhan Loc Phat designs and machines die casting molds to order.
