Aluminum sand casting – flexible and economical

Aluminum sand casting is one of the most widely used casting methods thanks to its flexibility, reasonable cost and strong parts. It suits everything from one-off orders to large production runs.

How it works

A mold is formed from sand and binder packed around a pattern. Aluminum is melted at about 660°C and poured into the mold. Once it solidifies, the sand is broken away to release the casting. Reclaimed sand can be reused, keeping material costs low.

The 5-step process

1. Pattern: made from wood, plastic or metal in the shape of the part.

2. Sand mold: sand mixed with binder is compacted around the pattern.

3. Pouring: molten aluminum is poured through the gating system.

4. Cooling and shake-out: the mold is broken to release the part.

5. Finishing: gates are removed, then turning, milling, surface treatment and coating as needed.

Advantages

Low tooling cost, complex and large shapes, fast mold making, and easy post-machining for tight tolerances.

Automotive and motorcycle parts, industrial machine components, household and decorative items, and mechanical parts requiring strength and good appearance.
