What is wire EDM?

Wire EDM (electrical discharge machining) is a non-contact process in which sparks between a wire and the workpiece melt and vaporize conductive material. The brass or molybdenum wire moves continuously along the programmed profile.

How it works

The wire and workpiece sit close together in a dielectric (usually deionized water) under high voltage. When the gap is small enough a spark forms and melts a tiny amount of material, the dielectric flushes the debris away, and the cycle repeats thousands of times per second.

Advantages

Tolerances down to ±0.002–0.005 mm; cuts hardened steel, titanium, stainless and carbide; small holes, narrow slots and sharp corners; no cutting force or distortion; fine surface finish.

Applications

Injection, die-casting and rubber molds; gears, cams, shafts, clamps and blades; medical, electronic and aerospace parts; metal logos and fine art pieces.

Limitations

Only conductive materials can be cut, machines are expensive and require skilled programming, and cutting is slower than conventional methods, offset by accuracy and stability.
