Rubber Compression Molding Process in 5 Steps

Rubber Compression Molding Process in 5 Steps

The 5-step rubber compression molding process: mold preparation, material preparation, pressing and vulcanization, cooling and demolding, and finishing.

What is rubber compression molding?

A rubber preform is placed in a heated mold, the mold is closed and a press applies pressure until the rubber fills the cavity and cures. It is the most common method for gaskets, seals and pads thanks to simple, affordable molds.

Preparing the compression mold

1. Mold preparation: clean, apply release agent and preheat.

Preparing rubber preforms

2. Material preparation: weigh and cut preforms accurately.

Pressing and vulcanizing rubber

3. Pressing and curing, with one or two "bumps" to release trapped air.

Cooling and removing rubber parts

4. Demolding carefully to avoid distortion.

Finishing rubber parts

5. Finishing: deflash, clean, inspect and pack.

Reducing defects

Heavy flash: weigh preforms and add overflow grooves. Voids: bump the press and add vents. Short fills: increase preform weight or pressure. Sticking: polish the cavity. Many defects start with mold design, which is where Nhan Loc Phat can help.
