What Is a Rubber Mold? 3 Common Rubber Molding Methods
What is a rubber mold? How rubber is shaped with heat and pressure, and the three common molding methods: injection, compression and transfer molding.
What is a rubber mold?
Rubber parts are made from uncured rubber or elastomers, materials that return to their original shape after deformation. Most technical parts today use synthetic rubber.

A rubber mold is a metal cavity shaped like the part. Rubber is pressed into it and heated so it vulcanizes, locking the shape.
Three common methods
- Compression molding: a preform is placed in an open mold and pressed. Best for large, thick parts in medium volumes.
- Transfer molding: rubber in a pot is forced through runners into the cavity. Best for insert-molded, precise parts.
- Injection molding: rubber is pumped into a closed mold. Best for high volumes of small, complex parts.

Nhan Loc Phat designs and machines molds for all three methods. Send your drawing and expected volume for advice.
